While much of the auto world's attention has been focused on Geely's attempt to buy Volvo from Ford and what that might mean for the popular Swedish marque, there's another side to the story that's gotten far less coverage: the possibility that Volvo dealerships will begin selling Geely vehicles. Like BAIC, Sichuan Tengzhong, and other Chinese outfits, Geely wants to become an international player in the auto marketplace.

IT’S official – Volvo is heading into Chinese hands. Ford has agreed to sell the Swedish manufacturer to Chinese giant Geely. In a statement, the Blue Oval said that it still had ‘some work to do to complete the deal’ but it is likely to be finalised in the Spring. The news at last gives Volvo security, ensuring that cars like the upcoming new S60 and an electric version of the C30 hatchback have a future.

Possibly the biggest news to come out of Volvo's announcement of pricing for the 2011 C30 is that there is going to BE a 2011 C30. We ogled the nipped and tucked C30 T5 in Frankfurt and came away even more smitten than before with Volvo's neo-brake. The revised fascia and nipped and tucked bumpers bring the C30 into line with the future of Volvo design, however shaky that may be.

Geely is already Ford’s preferred bidder for Volvo but the Chinese automaker is also keen on acquiring the Saab business from General Motors now that the deal with Swedish consortium Koenigsegg AB is over. [Autocar] Another day another supercar bites the dust. This time a Pagani Zonda F, which met its demise on the streets of Hong Kong.

In today's episode of the Ford/Volvo saga, the U.S. consortium known as Crown has announced plans to submit a bid for Volvo this week that will rival that of Chinese automaker (and current preferred bidder) Geely. Crown's bid will be in the $2 billion to $2.5 billion range -- somewhat less than Geely's rumored $3 billion offer.

The bid made by Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, the parent of Geely Automobile Holdings, for Ford Motor Co.’s Volvo car unit is in the final stretches of getting approved. One of the issues recently resolved is related to the rights. Yuan Xiaolin, a Geely spokesman, had said that Volvo will retain the rights for its licensed technologies and that Chinese bidder Geely will gain the right to use the technologies.

Swedespeed has asked the question that anyone who follows Volvo is thinking: Will R cars return? After a tumultuous last couple of years that saw the Swedish brand suffer falling sales amidst parent company Ford's effort to sell the brand to the highest bidder (it's looking like Chinese automaker Geely at the moment), Volvo has gotten as far away from producing performance automobiles as a brand can.

Should Geely succeed in its bid to purchase Volvo, the Chinese automaker does not plan to spend any time playing in its new Swedish sandbox. Ford moved about 380,000 Volvos around the world last year; Geely wants to sell 2.5 times that amount within five years. How so? By injecting "two or three bigger, more luxurious cars" into the lineup and working its home market of China, which Geely feels could be unlocked for 200,000 vehicles alone.

Volvo will use the Geneva Auto Show next March as the platform to debut its new S60 luxury sedan. The Swedish automaker has even released two images of what the upcoming vehicle will look like and we’re happy to report that much of the more dynamic styling from the concept car has been carried over.

After all the rumours and speculation, Geely looks set to buy struggling Swedish firm Volvo. There’s no word yet on how much the Chinese manufacturer is likely to pay, but this news marks a major milestone for the Chinese car industry and reinforces just how tough even the most established marques are finding the financial crisis.

The government of China may be angling hard to unseat the U.S. as the world's dominant economic power (case in point: itsstrong support of a plan to end oil trading in U.S. dollar formats), but China's homegrown companies don't have quite as much weight to throw around. As an example, look no further than Chinese automaker Geely and its drawn-out attempt to purchase Volvo from Ford.
