Kia has bared its Soul at last! These are the first offical pictures of the new compact car, which will go into battle with Nissan's Note and Honda's Jazz later this year. As you can see, the production version gets the same chunky styling as the trio of Soul concepts that’ll be at the British Motor Show next week.

Adding to speculation that Chrysler’s original deal with China’s Chery Auto to source a Chinese-built compact car for sale in the U.S. may be in trouble comes news that the Auburn Hills carmaker has now signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with rival Chinese carmaker Great Wall Motor (GWM). The MoU is for the exploration of long-term business ties between the two carmakers in various areas including distribution, components and technology.

The Reva Electric Car Company has officially made the REVAi (A.K.A. the G-Wiz i) available for sale in its native India. It has high expectations for sales of the improved award winner in its homeland, saying they would be very happy to sell 3,000 vehicles in Delhi this year. No doubt, since it has only sold 2,500 units so far in 13 other countries. They expect and are preparing for a sharp increase in demand as the company plans on quintupling its production capacity from its current 6,000 units per annum to 30,000 by the end of this year, although it may actually take a full three years to ramp up to those output numbers.

In the course of developing hybrid vehicles, automakers typically try to minimize parasitic losses wherever possible to maximize the fuel efficiency numbers. For Chrysler's first production hybrids, the Dodge Durango and Chrysler Aspen, the struggling automaker has incorporated a new sensor that measures temperature and humidity. Like GM's two-mode hybrids, the air conditioning system in the Chryslers is electrically driven off the hybrid battery. As those of us who live in areas with hot humid conditions are aware, the moisture level in the air has as much to do with perceived heat as the ambient temperature.

There's no official obituary for GM's HUMMER brand yet, but haters are lacing up their dancing shoes while lovers wring their hands. Dealers with HUMMER franchises have a lot of skin in the game, so the uncertain future is bound to give business officers ulcers. Not willing to wait around to the bitter end, Milwaukee's Bergstrom HUMMER is planning to move into the same space as the group's Chevrolet store. The HUMMER-specific Quonset hut style dealership building will be toned down and pressed into service as an outlet for Certified used GM vehicles. Other HUMMER dealers across the nation are staring down the same conundrum, being on the hook for that big, rugged showroom, test track, inventory, and staff, while the parent company looks to clamp off bleeders. Some might follow Bergstrom's lead and shove the big trucks into a corner of a showroom dominated by a more stable brand, while others are shipping inventory as fast as they can.

The Monaco post office has just purchased a pair of electric delivery vans from Newteon ecofriendly vehicles. Le Poste Monaco chose a pair of Electric Porter vans equipped with lithium batteries. Newteon offers the Porter with either lead acid or lithium phosphate battery packs. Both variants have top speeds of 70km/h (44mph) but the lead acid battery only yields about 44miles of range. The lithium pack ups that range to about 75 miles and increases the payload from 900lb to 1,100lbs. The compact dimensions of the Porter make it well-suited to the use in the narrow streets of the Mediterranean principality.

Running diesel vehicles on biofuels is a good thing, right? Not always, according to Greenpeace Argentina. It seems that the export of soybeans from Argentina is causing more pollution than was initially estimated. Also, too much of Argentina's native forests are being mowed down for the soybeans. These issues are in stark contrast with two of Greenpeace's stated charters: (1) catalyzing an energy revolution to address the number one threat facing our planet: climate change and (2) supporting sustainable agriculture by encouraging socially and ecologically responsible farming practices.

GM announcd that it plans to cut a shift at four North American factories that produces pickups and SUVs. The cur means the General will be laying off about 3,500 workers. Of course all this comes as a response to sluggish sales in the respective segments and high gasoline prices.
GM said the cuts mean the company will produce about 50,000 fewer SUVs and 88,000 fewer pickups in 2008.

This is Volkswagen’s new range-topping Touareg, the R50. Its party trick is an uprated version of familiar 5.0-litre V10, which wrings a massive 627lb ft of torque and 345bhp from the ageing pump duse engine; an increase of 74lb ft, 36bhp and £3885 over the previous range-topper, the Altitude.
Stamp your right foot to the floor and you will roar past 62mph in 6.7 seconds – faster than you would in a Focus ST. In a car that deserves its own magnetic force field, weighing in at 2602kg, that feels similar to taking a step forward and discovering that the ground has dropped by two foot more than you were expecting.

Bucking the trend of China’s copycat design regime, the HongQi SUV concept revealed at this week’s Beijing auto show is a fairly unique creation, and though it isn’t groundbreaking, it’s not a barely-disguised imitation either.
Tending firmly toward the production-ready end of the concept car spectrum, the SUV looks like it could go roll off an assembly line - with a few tweaks for practicality - within months, although the company doesn’t expect to come to market with the car until 2010. Power for the concept comes from an FAW Group (HongQi’s parent company) V12. No word yet on whether the company has plans to sell the SUV outside of China.

Chevrolet will join the trio of big GM crossovers with a fourth family vehicle, the Traverse.
On display at the Chicago auto show, the Traverse is based on the same mechanicals as the Buick Enclave, GMC Acadia, and Saturn Outlook. Chevrolet says it's targeting the likes of the Ford Edge, Toyota Highlander, and Honda Pilot with the new seven- or eight-passenger Traverse.
The Traverse, which goes on sale in the fall as a 2009 model, shares some of the styling themes applied to the award-winning 2008 Chevrolet Malibu, GM says in a release. It's a distinct look with more crisp lines than either the Enclave or Outlook; details like the tailgate spoiler and a chromed grille surround give it a personality separate from the other big GM triplets. The Traverse's dual-cockpit design and large gauges tie it with other recent Chevrolet efforts.
