If you are a regular reader of Automobile Magazine, you know that we start each year by selecting our "of the Year" award winners. More than any other award, our Design of the Year causes confusion and provokes controversy. By choosing the Nissan Cube as our 2010 Design of the Year, this time around was no exception.

Nissan is putting the economic slump, which so cruelly affected to auto industry last year, well and truly behind it, boasting today that it will have eight new or revised models on sale in the U.S. within the next 12 months. Despite the harsh financial conditions of last year Nissan chose to soldier on with development work on its new models, explained the automaker’s U.S. chief, Carlos Tavares, who spoke yesterday at the 2010 Detroit Auto Show.

Nissan has named the latest addition to its line up of quirky crossovers, as well as releasing the gloomy teaser shot you see here. Inspired by the Qazana concept shown in Geneva last year, and following in the footsteps of the hugely successful Qashqai, the 'Juke' is designed to offer customers a funky alternative to the traditional small hatchback.

Large SUVs and minivans have fallen on the hardest of times in the industry's late downturn, and casualties of the recession mount daily. Nissan today confirmed in an email to TheCarConnection that it would be bringing U.S. production of the Quest minivan to an end later this year, and will not sell a 2010 edition of the van.

If we told you there was a variant of the iconic Nissan GT-R putting out around 600 horsepower, gobs of weight-saving technology and fuel economy that can hit 25-30 mpg on the highway would you be interested? What if we told you that the added power came via the same 160 hp electric motor that rested beneath the beautiful sheetmetal of the Infiniti Essence concept at last year's Geneva Motor Show?

Recently we’ve heard several rumors about Nissan resurrecting its 240SX model, with each report becoming more credible. The latest comes from the folks at InsideLine, who say Nissan is in fact planning to bring back the 240 (known as the Silvia in Japan), which will be aimed at the younger and less affluent side of the market, but those who still want a proper rear-drive sports car.

Sometimes, the GT-R can seem ill-suited to real life, where the car's truly awesome performance is always under constraint, which then brings into focus its less-flattering qualities, like the fact that it's cramped, or noisy, or hard to see out of. But then you take it to a racetrack, as we recently did, and you're reminded that this car is an absolute Superman.

It's hip to be square! Nissan has announced that the Cube, one of the UK's most popular grey imports, will officially go on sale here in January. Thankfully, the boxy city car won't lose any of its quirky charm when it finally reaches our shores. The Japanese firm has fitted a large triple-layered glass sun-roof which comes with a traditional 'shoji' shade made of rice paper.

If the ranges offered by the upcoming Nissan and Renault electric cars aren't as long as you'd like, you'll be pleased to learn they should double by 2015. Nissan is just about done developing an energy storage cell that has twice the capacity of their current batteries. Focusing their research efforts on the positive electrode..

The latest city to join the long list of more than 30 cities and governments that have signed an agreement with Renault-Nissan is Guangzhou, a large city formerly known as Canton. Nissan's partner in China, Dongfeng, will work with the municipality to have electric cars available to customers and to create a charging network for these vehicles to use.

One thing David Cole said when we talked to him at the Business of Plugging In expo was that parts suppliers need to change in order to keep up with the demand for new parts in electric vehicles. In Japan, the Nissan Leaf has become a sort of wake up call for Japanese parts companies, who can see firsthand that, when you scrap the ICE, thousands of parts that suppliers have been providing OEMs for decades are all of a sudden not needed.

A variant of the Nissan GT-R – the SpecM – may be released as early as next year. Not many people are familiar with the M-Spec. It was part of the R34 lineup and had received plenty of compliments due to its compliant suspension and overall civility. The R34 V-Spec was clearly made for the track. On the other hand, the M-Spec was regarded to be more of a grand tourer. It boasted the best of comfort as well as an impressive performance.

When Dodge announced that it wouldn't be sharing its Ram platform with Nissan, we just kind of assumed that the Titan was going to go the way of the Do Do. Why? Because Titan sales are the suck. Nissan has only sold 15,393 copies of its largest truck through the first 10 months of the year. For perspective, Ford sold more F-150s in the first two weeks of October than Nissan has sold in 43 weeks.
