I've been reading an unhealthy amount of car reviews for more years than I dare to count and I'm guessing you're the same. But over the last decade, I've become increasingly selective about which sources and writers are worthy of fulfilling my fix. Money that should otherwise be stuffed away for a rainy day or put towards replacing the waterpump in my E36 inevitably finds its way into the till of my local bookseller when a new issue of Evo or Car hits the stands. While it still seems that a handful of buff books and a select few newspaper writers have the market cornered on the art of road-going storytelling, one light shines in our little corner of the webiverse.

Once upon a time, coachbuilding was a thriving industry, especially in Italy with marques like Zagato, Vignale, Bertone, Ghia and Carozzeria Touring Superleggera. Today, despite the fact that the coachbuilding business isn’t what it used to be, some companies have managed to keep the flame alive. Touring Superleggera for example is showing off two unique concepts at this weekend’s (April 25-27, 2008), classic car show “Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este”.

Despite the downturn in the U.S. auto market - one of the most important for either brand - and the generally weak global economy, Ferrari and Maserati are measuring their profitability in the millions for the first quarter of 2008. Strong V12-model sales at Ferrari and GranTurismo sales for Maserati formed the foundation of the quarter’s success.
Ferrari sold four percent more 612 Scagliettis and 599 GTB Fioranos than the same period last year, a total of 1,654 cars. Revenue jumped 20% despite the modest increase in sales, to €456 million, while profit rose nealry 200% from €31 million to €59 million, reports Autmotive News.

In its own kinky Italian way, the Maserati Quattroporte Bellagio Fastback concept is one good looking station wagon that we wouldn’t mind at all seeing parked in our garage. The concept vehicle was created by Italian coachbuilder Carrozeria Touring Superleggera and it will be shown off for the first time at this weekend’s “Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este” classic car show.

Rumors have been confirmed that Maserati will unveil a high(er)-performance version of its GranTurismo coupe at the Geneva Motor Show next week, to be called the GranTursimo S.
The most noteworthy difference between standard and S GranTurismos is found in the engine bay. The 4.7-liter V-8 is now up to the same specification found in the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione, which means a full 440 horsepower is on tap, compared with the standard GranTurismo's 405 horses. An electro-actuated gearbox with Maserati's MC-Shift technology sends the power to the GranTurismo's rear wheels and is fitted to the rear transaxle, for optimal weight distribution. To cope with the added power, the same Brembo six-piston monoblock brakes found in the Quattroporte Sport GT S are found in Maserati's super coupe as well.

Maserati has released a video showing their Chicane concept car which will debut at next month’s Geneva Auto Show. Several students at the European Institute of Design in Turin created the concept as part of the Maserati Challenge.
The V8 powered Chicane features 2+2 seating and is smaller in size than the Quattroporte and Granturismo, measuring in at 4,400 mm in length, 1,850 mm wide and 1,250 mm high. The video also shows another part of the Maserati Challenge, where students were asked to create a shooting brake concept. Named the Sfida, the concept is a 3D animation meant to test the design student's abilities and creativity.

For all the motor industry’s change, some things stay the same. Fuel prices go up, some car-makers make hay while others go to the wall. And Maserati finds itself flitting cyclically between plodding, and being on the fringe of a resurgence which, as often as not, starts with a fabulous-looking, desirable and enchanting coupe, and finishes with disappointing dynamics, questionable durability, or a combination of the two.

Continuing a tradition which began in 2004 with the introduction of the four-door Quattroporte, Maserati has brought Italian flair and desire to Naples, allowing one lucky individual the chance to return from the annual Naples Winter Wine Festival with an even rarer vintage -- a 2008 specially customized GranTurismo luxury performance coupe.
The deep metallic carbon black beauty has elegant beige interior with contrasting black stitching along with unique door sills reading "2008 Naples Winter Wine Festival 1 of 1." The stunning four seat coupe offered for auction brought in a strong bid of $350,000, more than three times its base price.
