Back in the 70s, the first great oil shock threatened to obliterate the fun in driving. This time around, that's not the case. Modern electronic management systems and highly efficient engines are allowing engineers to create drivetrains that provide outstanding fuel economy and performance. Combine those two elements with a great chassis and you can have a blast behind the wheel -- without draining your wallet or your conscience.

The electric vehicle offensive of BMW has been pretty quiet with very little action coming from the premium automaker. That is of course until today's announcement which stated they will create 500 electric versions of the Mini which will all be exported to California. 490 of them will be leased to selected customers with the remaining 10 set to be saved for display purposes.

While not the highest-mileage car on the road, the little MINI has got style to go with its 37mpg (U.S.). Maybe that's why MINI USA is announcing that Americans are showing more interest in MINI than ever before. Visitors to the MINIUSA website were up almost 89 percent in May compared to a year ago. People are doing more than looking, too, with sales in the first five months of 2008 up 36 percent compared to January-May of 2007. MINI USA's vice president Jim McDowell said in a statement (available after the jump) that a lot of new people "who haven't thought about a MINI before are checking us out.

At first glance, we couldn't help but wish we had had one of these when we were in high school. But on second thought, a pink-accented MINI might not have been the babe-magnet Agent Provocateur would have us believe. At least, not for any girls we know, but if this is what it takes to inspire impromptu gatherings of scantily-clad lingerie models, then who are we to argue.

When we reported on this SM themed Agent Provocateur Mini Clubman, we took an impossible-to-resist shot at Max Moseley, but now Mini and the AIDS charity Life Ball may be making the most of the FIA president's infamous escape, too. In order to publicize the car's upcoming auction, the black and pink police car has been photographed with, you guessed it, four whip-wielding dominatrixes wearing Gestapo-esque caps... and not a whole lot else. This Dutch website has been diligent enough to post a video of the photoshoot (WARNING: NSFW video).

Mini is adding a 4x4 to its line-up and it is expected to go on sale next year.
The new model is likely to look similar to the Clubman, but it will have a raised right-height and share its underpinnings with the forthcoming BMW X1 - another small SUV expected to go on sale next year.
Although the design will be similar to the Clubman, the Mini 4x4 will have two rear side doors, rather than the single 'suicide' door on the Clubman, and two van-like doors at the back of the car.
It is expected to be longer than the Clubman, giving more legroom and a larger load area. A 118bhp 1.6-litre petrol, a 109bhp 1.6-litre diesel and a 173bhp 1.6-litre petrol are likely to be included in the engine line-up. A six-speed manual transmission will be standard and an automatic 'box will be optional.

MINI brought out their Works versions of the Cooper and Clubman in Geneva today. Using a fleet of R/C cars and rally legend Rauno Aaltonen (The Flying Finn), they hammered home the idea that MINI's are small on size but big on excitement. We had already seen a ton of press pics so there weren't any real surprises, just a healthy appreciation for these great small cars that now have John Cooper Garage's tuning prowess added to the mix. The JCW Cooper and JCW Cooper Clubman have indeed hit the bullseye for enthusiasts once again. Featuring performance upgrades and new interior appointments, these are the cars that will be used as the basis for the MINI CHALLENGE 2008 race cars.
In JCW trim, the turbocharged MINI 1.6L four now puts out 207 HP. The resulting 0-60 should now clock in at just under 6.5 seconds for the Cooper, while the ever so slightly portlier Clubman is likely to be a tick or two slower. Unique light alloy wheels, a new performance exhaust system, upgraded suspension, and a modified six-speed manual transmission are just some of the mechanical upgrades. Aesthetically, the John Cooper Works models stand out with their distinctive body kits and unique interiors, all for a not-so-mini base price of under $30,000.

Anticipation of the upcoming Geneva auto show is showing through in the reveals already taking place. BMW has just let slip its John Cooper Works Mini Cooper S and Clumban models, and we’ve got all the details and pictures.
Following on the tradition of saving the sportiest variants for the John Cooper Works line of Mini cars, the latest Cooper S and Clubman models bring very similar stats to the performance party. At 155kW (211hp) and 260Nm torque, the 1.6L twin-scroll turbocharged petrol four-cylinder provides the power to get the JCW Cooper S to 100km/h (62mph) in just 6.5s. The Clubman follows at 6.8s. An ‘overboost’ feature allows the JCW Minis to bump torque up to 280Nm for short stints under hard acceleration. Top speed comes at 238km/h (148mph).
While traction control gets in the way of the fun - although it helps to limit torque steer around town - a press of the DSC-off button gets rid of some of the electronic-nannying while also engaging an Electric Differential Lock on the drive axle, which improves handling and acceleration in much the same way a limited slip differential does.

Following the relaunch of John Cooper Works as MINI’s in-house performance division, the little carmaker that could is preparing to unveil the new JCW MINI Cooper S at Geneva auto show, which is now approaching as rapidly as the hot hatch itself. Meanwhile details are emerging over what the first factory JCW will include, and it looks good.
In brief, JCW has reworked, upgraded and optimized the turbocharger, the pistons, the air intake, the transmission, the clutch, the brakes, the wheels, the exhaust and the ECU. The crew at MotoringFile, those intrepid gurus of everything MINI, says that while the bigger turbo, upgraded induction, cat-back exhaust and electronics do their part, the pistons are where it’s at, revving higher and smoother than those in the conventional Cooper S.
