To help celebrate the brand’s return to the pinnacle of motorsports, iconic British sports car maker Lotus has just announced the release of the Exige S Type 72. As the name suggests, it’s inspired by the Type 72 F1 car, which was driven by drivers like Jochen Rindt, Emerson Fittipaldi, Ronnie Peterson and Jacky Ickx, who took it to 20 victories between 1970 and 75, with two Driver’s World Championships (in ‘70 and ‘72) and three Constructors’ Championships (in 1970, ‘72 and ‘73).

After a 15-year hiatus, Lotus is coming back to Formula One, and to commemorate its return to the top tier of motorsport, the Hethel crew is creating yet another special Exige inspired by the Type 72 that dominated F1 in the Seventies. Like nearly every other limited edition Lotus released in the last few years, the Exige S Type 72 is little more than a repainted, kitted-up version of its midship masterpiece.

The Lotus brand has flown somewhat under the radar for the last decade or so in the United States, well-known to enthusiasts that enjoy its focused, no-compromises Elise and Exige sports cars, but often unheard of by more mainstream car shoppers and fans. But the 2010 Evora is primed to bring Lotus back into the luxury sports car market with stylish, comfortable interior and two-plus-two seating, and today the car's price was revealed for the U.S. market, starting from $73,500.

2010 Lotus Exige 260 S

Objectively, the Lotus Exige is a very silly car. It looks like someone took an Elise - itself a silly car - and attacked it with carbon fiber. It's so tiny and impractical that even I, a short 24 year old, had a difficult time climbing in and out of it. Of course, after driving the Exige, just about every other car on the road seems silly, especially other "performance" vehicles.

2010 Lotus Evora Official US Specs Leaked

Back in March, we provided information concerning the European delivery of the Lotus Evora. However, since then there hasn't been any information on a stateside release and big question marks remain. Now, thanks to the folks at Lotusenthusiast.net, we finally have the official US specs and they are impressive. The car will sport a Toyota-produced 3.5L V6 engine capable of 276 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. This by itself is not so overwhelming, but when you factor in the weight of the car (3,047 pounds) the car sprints 0 to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds.

Is the mid-engine-V6-powered 2010 Lotus Evora 2+2 a spiritural successor to the Dino 246 GT of the late 60s, the baby Ferrari that Maranello never gets around to building? Or is it just the most accessible and refined Lotus built to date? Either way, writes Matt Davis, the Evora is a car that satisfies on multiple levels.
