In a trend that is sure to prove popular, Hyundai will add a less powerful and more fuel efficient four-cylinder to the available engine lineup on its Santa Fe model when it is redesigned for 2010. As of today, the four-door crossover is available with a choice of either a 2.7-liter or a 3.3-liter six-cylinder powerplant mated to four- or five-speed automatics (a five-speed manual is optional on the smaller engine). Both are rated at 24 mpg highway in the current model.

Hyundai will release its first hybrid vehicle for sale to the general public in 2009, as long as the general public in question lives in Korea. Though the automaker has been testing hybrids for the last few years, only government officials were able to drive the vehicles. According to Hyundai, though, none of the research and development costs for its hybrid drivetrain were paid for through government grants. This information seems much more important after Mark Fields' recent assertion that the Korean government had provided assistance to its automakers for the development of the fuel-saving technology. There has also been some question as to whether the Japanese government helped pay for hybrid development, though Toyota denies these allegations.

Richard Cortez, the Mayor of McAllen, Texas, called a news conference earlier this week to announce that city officials were in talks with an unnamed automaker to build a new manufacturing facility in the Rio Grande Valley. Interestingly enough, he gave few other details as he was worried about upsetting the "customer" as they have asked for silence on the project. Not to surprise anyone, but all signs are pointing at Hyundai Motor Company.

While Hyundai offers a front wheel drive minivan in the U.S. market called the Entourage, it's only available with the Korean manufacturer's 3.8L gas V-6. It gets an EPA overall rating of 18mpg, which is competitive in its segment here in North America but no great shakes overall. Overseas, Hyundai has just released a new eight-seat rear wheel drive full-sized van called the i800. The i800 gets motivation from a 2.5L four cylinder diesel engine with common rail injection. The diesel generates 170hp and 289lb-ft of torque which won't get any enthusiasts excited in this application (what enthusiast would get excited about a van like this, anyway?) but should be more than adequate for the purpose.

Two things revealed at this year's New York Auto Show had our salivary glands working overtime. The first was the Hyundai Genesis Coupe, which proved that at least one automaker (and now, two and possibly three) is getting hip to the idea that a rear-wheel-drive, two-door coupe with a turbocharged four-cylinder is needed in the marketplace.

This year is the last for the Tiburon two-door hatch, though Hyundai is quick to point out it’s not being replaced by the new Genesis coupe due to hit dealerships in early 2009. Its replacement - another small FWD coupe - will most likely be based on the sexy Veloster concept from the Seoul auto show.
“We are seriously looking at a small front-wheel-drive coupe to replace the Tiburon, but I can’t say when that will happen,” said John Krafcik, Vice President of product development for Hyundai, in an interview with Automotive News.
He went on to emphasize the Genesis coupe is intended to fill a new role in the company’s lineup - it’s not a Tiburon replacement. The new Veloster-based car would be the spiritual heir to the Tiburon legacy.

Hyundai will be unveiling the new facelifted 2009 Hyundai Elantra at the Beijing Auto Show that will take place later this month.
As you can see from the images, the 2009 Elantra will have a completely redesigned front end compared to the U.S. model, inspired by the i30 and Elantra Touring models. The new Elantra will also get a slightly new rear-end with a new bumper, tail lamps and a redesigned trunk.
No word on technical specs or when the new Elantra will make its way over to the stateside.

This is the Hyundai Coupé TSIII, a new limited-edition model designed to give the coupé a more sporting look as this generation of the car nears replacement.
The TSIII gets sports suspension, smoked alloys, quad exhaust pipes and a large boot spoiler to boost its sporting credentials. But it doesn’t receive an upgrade in power; the 2.0-litre, 141bhp engine takes it from 0-62mph in 9.3sec.
Even if the performance won’t see you smoking the quarter-mile the coupé is good value; its starting price of £19,595 is only £1575 over the SIII model it will replace, and it comes with plenty of interior comforts. Cruise control, climate control, heated leather seats and iPod connectivity all feature as standard, and you also get the Hyundai five-year, unlimited-mileage warranty thrown in.

Hyundai has no intentions to stop making headlines and turning heads at auto shows. Recently the Korean automaker surprised the industry with their new 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe, which it says will be a direct rival to the Infiniti G37 (or those that want G37 power for much cheaper).
When producing the Genesis Coupe, Hyundai had set its sights on the G37 as the benchmark. So how does it compare to the Infiniti G37? Besides the size and the looks, the Genesis Coupe is also up-to-par in the performance segment.
The Genesis Coupe will arrive as either a 4-cylinder turbo producing 223-hp on premium and 212-hp on regular fuel or as a 3.8 liter V6 churning out 306-hp on regular and 310-hp on premium. The Infiniti G37, on the other hand, runs on a 3.7 liter V6 producing 330-hp. Now with a 20-hp difference it may not be a direct competitor, but with rear-wheel-drive, the Genesis Coupe is definitely a bargain.

Hyundai-Kia Chairman Chung Mong Koo said last Friday, while showing South Korean President Lee Myung Bak around the Kia facility, that Hyundai will start production of its first hybrid car by 2009. Further plans are to produce a small fleet of electric cars starting 2012.
Mr. chung said: "The importance of developing futuristic, environmentally-friendly cars is increasing for sustainable growth. Therefore, technology for advanced cars, like the hybrid, is imperative.”
Hyundai has set out a plan to achieve this target, first to develop the technology, create a mass production system and expand the model line-up. The first car to receive the hybrid treatment is the compact Elantra (Avante) LPI (Liqufied Petroleum Injection), the Elantra LPI Hybrid will run on both Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) and electricity. 2010 should see the introduction of mid-sized hybrids using LPG and regular petrol.

Hyundai is about to bring new levels of value for money to the UK market for large MPVs, with the announcement of a people-carrier that’ll offer eight seats and a large boot, for less than the price of the cheapest Ford S-Max.
The Hyundai i50M will be launched in Britain in June. Known as the H-1 Wagon in other markets, it’s 5.1-metre monocab that will double as a light commercial vehicle for Hyundai later in 2008, and is powered by a 2.5-litre turbodiesel engine with 168bhp and 289lb ft of torque.
The car will be offered in various levels of specification, with the cheapest likely to cost less that £17,000. A top-of-the-range version, equipped with leather upholstery, sat nav, parking sensors, rear-cabin DVD screens and multi-zone air-conditioning, will weigh in under £20k.

We’ve been excitedly awaiting the debut of Hyundai’s Genesis Coupe since we first saw the concept version at last year’s L.A. auto show. The Korean automaker finally came through today in New York, launching the production spec car to the delight of enthusiast everywhere.
As previously reported, the Coupe will be offered with two “performance-focused” engine choices, headed up by a 3.8-liter 306 horsepower V-6. That power, coupled with the rear-wheel-drive layout, should put the Hyundai squarely in the range of many Ford Mustang buyers if they’ll have it. The other powerplant, a 212 horse turbocharged 2.0-liter four, should also be capable of substantial thrills at a budget price.

It would've been cooler had the world met the 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe on Wednesday when it's scheduled to be unveiled at the 2008 New York Auto Show. That's not how things are playing out unfortunately, what with the first batch of official pics showing up on the interweb over the weekend, and the rest appearing today (we found them on MotorTrend.com, but they surely exist elsewhere). So instead of a big surprise on Hump Day, you'll get live shots and lots of details on powertrains, the suspension, options, etc. But for now, here are the rest of Hyundai's official pics for the 2009 Genesis Coupe, including images of the car in red, more action shots and views of the interior.
