Most of America is bounded by farmlands and bisected by highways: flat, fast and straight. Perhaps these are the kinds of driving conditions Pontiac's engineers had in mind when they took the G6 and made it into a GXP.
New for 2008, GXP replaces the GTP sport trim level for the G6 sedan and coupe and offers a host of improvements -- chief among them, a 3.6-liter V-6 engine that makes 252 horsepower and 251 lb-ft of torque. All G6 GXP models also come with GM's Hydra-Matic 6T70 six-speed automatic transmission, performance-tuned suspension, ABS, 18-inch aluminum alloy wheels, and specific exterior and interior goodies that differentiate it from regular G6 models, including leather seats, modified front and rear fascias, unique rocker panels, body-color mirror caps, and dual chrome exhaust tips.

Chevrolet launched its 2009 Silverado Hybrid in Los Angeles, but GMC waited to unveil its Sierra counterpart until today. The Sierra Hybrid, another application of GM’s 2-Mode hybrid technology, makes its debut this week at the Chicago auto show.
Like its Chevy sibling, the Sierra Hybrid uses a 6.0-liter V-8 and electric motor coupled through the same two-mode transmission used in all of GM’s full-size truck hybrids. GM claims the hybrid system helps the truck achieve a 25 percent improvement in overall fuel economy - a sizable gain, if true.

It seems GMC is out to redefine their concept of the SUV. The GMC TerraCross, taking design ques from GMC's “industrial precision” design standard, is far more sleek and edgy than any other SUV currently on the road. The TerraCross is meant to go hand-in-hand with GMC's other industrial precision concept, the Terradyne pick-up. “Just as last year’s Terradyne concept represents GMC’s vision for the ultimate ‘professional grade’ pick-up, TerraCross creates an innovative type of SUV, designed to exceed the expectations of the most demanding customers,” said Lynn Myers, Pontiac-GMC general manager. Coming to dealerships in late 2007, but on view at the February Chicago Auto Show is the 2008 GMC Yukon Hybrid. The hybrid expands GMC’s Professional Grade lineup, and it features the world's first two-mode hybrid propulsion system in an SUV. GM is teaming up with DaimlerChrysler and BMW Group to co-develop the two-mode hybrid system, which is a patented fuel-saving technology. The first mode of the system is for low speed and light loads. In this mode, the hybrid system can operate with electric power only, engine power only and any combination of engine and electric power. Next, the second mode kicks in at highway speeds. In addition to electric assist, the second mode integrates sophisticated electronic controls, such as Active Fuel Management, cam phasing and late-intake valve closure, to allow even more efficient engine operation with electric motors less than half the size of a traditional “one-mode” hybrid system. Full eight-cylinder aluminum small-block Vortec engine power is provided when conditions demand it, such as passing, climbing a steep grade, or towing up to 6,000-pounds. Visually, the ’07 Yukon includes a new hood, front and rear fascias and a sleek GMC grille.
