Back in early November, when Chrysler had its big business plan meeting, it became clear that most of the plug-in electric drive programs that the company has been promoting since early 2008 were being abandoned. One new test program that was announced was a plug-in hybrid version of the Ram pickup. The PHEV truck will be based on the two-mode hybrid Ram that is launching in 2010.

Chrysler is in a tough spot these days: not only is the company still recovering from bankruptcy and adjusting to the habits of its new lifepartner, Fiat, but Chrysler is also struggling to bring its product development arm up to speed after sitting idle for months. To keep consumers interested, Chrysler will need to work closely with Fiat to introduce new vehicles in the U.S., like the highly anticipated Fiat 500.

Chrysler Group wants all dealerships to sell Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram by the end of 2011. This directive means that dealers will require lots of capital in the coming years to improve operations and so Chrysler will be extending help. Where there are more brands, there would have to be new or bigger showrooms, more capable service departments, different signs and more employees.

Since emerging from bankruptcy nearly five months ago, Chrysler's been fairly quiet on the marketing front -- which may explain why the automaker's sales are so deep in the tank. (October 09 rang in 28% below October 08.) But a new $1.4 billion ad campaign aims to revive and refresh Chrysler's marques over the coming calendar year.

Listening to Chrysler's long and rambling 2010-2014 Business Plan, it was clear that the company and its dealerships are very much looking forward to finally getting the fuel efficient Fiat 500 in North America. Much like what happened when BMW launched the Mini brand eight-odd years ago, it's hoped that the cute little 500 will attract a whole new customer to the Chrysler fold.

Hours after Chrysler's bankruptcy became official, I was pulling out of the parking garage in a 2009 Chrysler 300C SRT8. This may sound stupid, but I feel obligated to tell anyone who will listen that the car continued to drive like usual. Not once did I worry about getting a replacement part or whether my local dealer would still be in business come Monday morning.

A story in the New York Times shines a light on some reasons for the Committee of Chrysler Affected Dealers to challenge the car company's bankruptcy efforts. According to Automotive Leasing Guide, the resale value of a Chrysler vehicle dropped six percent in the week following the company’s Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing.
