With plenty of rumors and a few decision changes by the folks at GM, Chevy confirmed at the Detroit Auto Show that the tiny Spark model will be offered in the United States in 2011. Originally shown as the Beat concept at the New York Auto Show back in 2007, the car has evolved slowly and last year launched in Europe.

Now that over a million miles have been put on the 100+ Chevrolet Equinox fuel cell vehicles that make up Project Driveway, GM is changing the focus from individual customer test drives to business fleets. As Green Car Advisor points out, the shift makes sense, since it's almost a given that fleets will be the first real users of production fuel cell vehicles.

Three years ago this December we first walked into a Manhattan conference room for a background briefing on a new concept being developed by General Motors for the upcoming Detroit Auto Show. Earlier that year, the release of a documentary called Who Killed the Electric Car made the then largest automaker in the world the subject of some well deserved criticism for its handling of the end of the EV1 program.

I didn't come close to exploring the limits of the 2010 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport that I had for the weekend. For that, I'm quite sure I'd need to visit a racetrack. As it was, our bright red Corvette coupe with shiny chrome wheels attracted plenty of attention on its own, without me breaking any of Ann Arbor's notoriously enforced speed laws.

General Motors’ large sedan future was looking rosy until the U.S. government decided to vote in favor of new CAFE rules, forcing automakers to improve the average fuel economy of their fleets to 35.5 mpg by 2016. We were teased with all manner of rear-wheel drive and V-8 powered muscle cars, including sedans, coupes, and even a sports wagon, and while some of these have made it to production or are at least confirmed for sale, many have fallen off the radar.

Years and years and years ago (like back in the Eighties), we read a study that broke down car ownership by gender. The car most purchased by men? The Porsche 928, with a score of 97% male. Most by women? 69% of the time the ladies bought Nissan Pulsars – you know, those oddball notchback/shooting brake/targa-top modular things that usually came in pink. We mention this because traditionally, muscle cars have aimed at and appreciated by men.

Yesterday, we had an opportunity to chat with Chevrolet Volt chief engineer Andrew Farah as he rode through the hills of West Virginia during a development drive. On Tuesday, a fleet of eight pre-production (a.k.a. IVER) Volts set out from the company's Milford Proving Ground in Michigan on three day, 1,200 mile jaunt through Ohio, Pennsylvannia, Maryland, West Virginia and back.

Inside sources are reporting minor price hikes on the 2010 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1, the fastest and most capable performance car fielded by General Motors. The cost for a new 2010 Corvette ZR1 including the gas guzzler tax is $109,530, an increase of $2910 over 2009. This nets out to an approximate increase of three percent. This increase shouldn't be much concern to those fortunate enough to be able to score a ZR1, especially with reports of dealers marking up this model as much as $10,000.

GM’s latest is a real crossover contender. BY STEVE SILER Say what you will about legacy costs, screwball UAW agreements, and brand hyper-proliferation, General Motors has undeniably talented designers and engineers. Those folks have in recent years created stellar products such as the current Cadillac CTS, the new Chevrolet Malibu, and a quartet of well-executed full-size crossovers. The problem, though, is that GM’s efforts—including the above standouts—tend to arrive late to their games.
