Stunning coupe styling in lengthened sedan form best describes the Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class, which debuted in 2005. For 2007, attention is focused under the hood where three newly developed engines will reside. Powering the CLS 350 CGI is the world’s first gasoline engine with piezoelectric direct injection and spray guided combustion. It produces 292 horsepower, while consuming 10 per cent less fuel. A new 388 horsepower, V-8 from the S Class motivates the CLS 500 and 514 horses are available from the CLS 63 AMG. There is also an all-new 224 horsepower diesel V-6 for the CLS 320 CDI. All engines have one thing in common, they route their horsepower through the 7-speed 7G-TRONIC automatic transmission. Shifting paddles on the steering wheel are optional. Stopping is also an M-B priority as CLS-Class cars now come with flashing brake lights that attract attention. A new adaptive brake system adds electronic controls to the hydraulic system. Luxurious interior seats 4-passengers, and the luggage area is a respectable 15.8-cubic feet of room.
