When Lexus was introduced as a new make in 1989, many questioned if a Japanese luxury car could succeed in the U.S. market. Now questions about the long-time sales leader regard what Lexus will do next to stay ahead of its field. For 2007, the all-new 4th-generation of the brand’s flagship LS 460 answers with the 460 L, the first long wheelbase Lexus. The line has long featured evolutionary changes, so as not to obsolete previous models. Power comes from a redesigned 4.6-liter, 385 horsepower V-8 featuring electric motor-driven variable valve timing with an electronically controlled intake valve cam and hydraulically controlled exhaust valve cam and dual fuel injection system with both port and direct injection. It is attached to the world’s first production 8-speed automatic transmission, which provides the optimum ratio for both acceleration and quiet cruising. Another feature is the optional Advanced Parking Guidance System that assists in the burdensome chore of parallel and back in parking something those doing same in downtown Chicago will appreciate.
