2007 Audi A4 Cabriolet & S4 Cabriolet Fame it!

Posted on Jan 22 2007 5:52 AM by Vicetra

Caught up in the excitement of showing off the all-new TT, Audi officials neglected to say anything about the 2007 Audi A4 and high-performance S4 Cabriolets parked next to the stage. No surprise, really, since these cars are only getting a refresh. This is the same refresh the sedan and wagon versions of these cars received in mid-2005, with the most obvious change being the adoption of Audi's mouthier grille design.

Other changes include a hood that's more prominently creased than before and reshaped headlights that peer out through clear lenses. Around back, the taillamp glass is also new, but the lights retain a rectangular shape. In addition, the S4 drop top gets a new rear diffuser and two exhaust outlets, rectifying its previous too-tame tail.

Inside the cars, you'll note a new steering wheel design and standard aluminum trim. Of course, there are still lovely wood trim options if metal isn't your thing.

On a more substantive level, the '07 A4 Cabriolet can be had with Audi's family of direct-injection engines. The base engine is the 2.0T, a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder rated for 200 horsepower and 207 pound-feet of torque. Unlike the old 1.8T, the 2.0T is available with either front-wheel drive or the quattro all-wheel-drive system. As in the past, front-drivers take a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), while quattro versions get a six-speed automatic. Unfortunately, you still can't get a manual gearbox on the cabriolet.

Buyers seeking more power can go with the 3.2-liter V6, which provides 255 hp and 243 lb-ft of torque. Quattro is standard with the V6, as is the automatic transmission.

Additionally, the 2007 A4 Cabriolet gets a series of chassis refinements. Engineers cribbed the design for the shock absorbers and various suspension mounts from the A6, and borrowed the rear trapezoidal links and front track rods from the S4. The springs and shocks have different tuning than before, and the steering has been modified for better precision and feel.

In contrast, the muscular S4 Cabriolet sticks with its current hardware. Suspension and steering are unchanged; the 4.2-liter V8 still makes 340 hp and 302 lb-ft of torque; and you can still get a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission, both of which feed power to all four wheels.

You'll have to wait until this fall to see these cars at Audi dealerships, and we're told there will be a slight price increase over the 2006 models.
